Description

The Elizabeth II 5 Pence issued between 1985 and 1990 is the final large-size version of Britain’s classic five pence coin. The obverse features Raphael Maklouf’s crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, while the reverse displays a distinctive crowned Scottish thistle, one of the traditional national symbols represented on British coinage.

Struck in copper-nickel, this large 5 Pence measures approximately 23.6 mm in diameter and was eventually replaced by the much smaller five pence coin introduced in 1990. The original large type was withdrawn from circulation at the end of that year, making it an interesting reminder of Britain’s earlier decimal coinage.

With its larger format, elegant royal portrait and traditional thistle design, the 1985–1990 Elizabeth II 5 Pence is an attractive addition to collections of British decimal coins, Elizabeth II coinage and vintage UK currency.
